NK farmers have a lot to look forward to in the 2022 crop season, from the newest class of Field Forged Series™ hybrids and varieties to the latest innovations and technologies to help them get the most out of every acre.
What are NK representatives in your area most excited about in the season ahead? From the Great Lakes to the southern Corn Belt, we invited them to share their “products to watch” for the 2022 growing season. Mark Riehl, NK Agronomist for the Great Lakes region, shares his products to watch for northern growers.
I cover a large geographic area, and that means a large maturity range for both corn and soybeans — but I have three staple corn hybrids and three staple soybean varieties I can always count on.
NK Products to Watch for 2022 — Mark Riehl:
For corn, starting in Michigan and then into Northern Ohio and Indiana, NK0243, at 102 days, is one of our consistent, reliable and versatile (CRV) hybrids. We keep it north of U.S. 30, but it is a great early- to full-season product in Michigan. NK0877 is a 108-day hybrid that overlaps NK0243 in southern Michigan but also goes south into central Indiana and Ohio. It’s another solid CRV corn hybrid that works in a wide array of soils and management. Our later-maturity CRV corn is NK1188, a 111-day hybrid that had a fantastic year in 2021 (and should do equally as well in 2022).
Each of these hybrids responds to management. They are semi-flex hybrids with good stalks and roots and a solid disease package against Gray Leaf Spot, Northern Corn Leaf Blight and Tar Spot, so they work in a wide variety of populations and management. We consider them “anchor products” to our success in the Great Lakes District.
Mark’s 2022 Soybean Picks
For soybeans, NK22-C4E3 is a product for Michigan, but it can also move south. It features solid agronomics that can perform from cool wet soils to lighter sands and still provide a solid agronomic package for Phytophthora Root Rot (PRR), Soybean White Mold (SWM) and Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS). It excels when placed on highly productive soils and with management, as does NK31-M7E3. NK31-M7E3 has a stacked trait gene for PRR, so it can sustain in poorly drained clay soils or highly productive soils as well. Finally, our anchor in Ohio and Indiana is S35-E3, which has not disappointed anywhere we have placed it the last two years. It can excel with good management!
NK sales representatives are always available to help a farmer identify the best hybrids and varieties for their unique growing environments, but for my region, these are six products farmers should consider for 2022.
For more information on these six products or any other NK corn and soybean products, contact your local NK sales representative or consult the 2022 NK Seed Guide.
