The crops may be harvested, but your work is far from over. To help you transition from harvest mode to maintenance and planning, The Amplifier has compiled a handy list of late fall reminders.

Equipment and Maintenance

  1. Check, clean, maintain and repair equipment for storage.

  2. Make any end-of-year equipment purchases or upgrades.

  3. Clean up fields and fence lines.

Crop Management

  1. Fall tillage and nitrogen applications may be complete, but now it’s time to plan for field preparation.

  2. Manage cover crops.

  3. Finalize fertilizer orders.

  4. Meet with seed and input dealers.

Evaluation and Planning

  1. Evaluate budgets, on-farm yield data, university tests and local yield maps.

  2. Review field notes. Identify any field issues. Research and evaluate how to mitigate them in the future.

  3. Think critically about seed treatments, their benefits and potential ROI.

  4. Leverage technology (spreadsheets, note-taking apps, online training courses) to organize notes for fields and future management.

  5. Market your business. Attend winter production meetings with county-level extensions, retailers and other industry organizations.

  6. Begin tax preparation and compile 2022 paperwork.

  7. Tend to bookkeeping, succession planning, rental agreements and personnel matters.

  8. Review new research for the coming season.

  9. Lock in products early.

  10. Make time to relax, reset and learn!
