NK agronomists share how their 2022 “products to watch” performed this growing season

Early last spring, NK agronomists from across the Corn Belt shared their corn and soybean 2022 “products to watch” — the hybrids and varieties they were most confident would earn farmers’ acres in their areas. As the growing season wound to a close, The Amplifier followed up to see how these predictions turned out.

This week, we hear from central Illinois agronomist, Craig Mackey. The growing season got off to a wet start in his area, and there were some areas of limited Tar Spot outbreaks, but for the most part Illinois farmers had few significant disease challenges with the dry growing conditions in 2022.

Craig’s corn hybrids to watch for 2022: NK1082 and NK1188.

“As expected, both NK1082-DV and NK1188 performed very well against the competitors in Illinois independent replicated trials,” Mackey reports. “Both hybrids continue to have impressive yield performance across multiple environments and are in high demand for 2023.”

Specifically:

  • NK1082-DV yielded 20.6 Bu/A* over plot average of 30+ entries in the southern half of Illinois.
  • NK1082-DV had an average yield advantage of 14.5 Bu/A in 60+ independent replicated trials in Illinois.
  • NK1188-D yielded 29.7 Bu/A over plot average of 30+ entries in central Illinois.
  • NK1188 had an average yield advantage of 11.4 Bu/A in 60+ independent replicated trials in Illinois.

Craig’s soybean varieties to watch for 2022: NK37-V4E3S.

“On the soybean side, several varieties rose to the top of the yield results in 2022,” says Mackey. “NK37-V4E3S performed very well in the southern part of Illinois, even in the toughest of growing conditions, gaining a 2.6 Bu/A average advantage over Pioneer® soybeans.”

NK37-V4E3S wasn’t the only high performer in Mackey’s region this season. He says that other top-performing NK soybean products included NK30-B2E3, NK33-W2E3S, NK39-M8XF, NK40-P5E3 and NK43-Y9XFS.

“This helps place our NK growers in an excellent position to succeed in the 2023 season,” Mackey predicts.
